A warm welcome to Studley Parish Council

Summer in Studley

Agenda for council meeting to be held on 3 August 2010.

SAVE OUR FIRE STATION - IT IS NOT TOO LATE!!

SAVE OUR FIRE STATION - IT IS NOT TOO LATE!!

As Long as there is an Appliance in Studley we will keep Fighting

Decision made on 20th July to close Studley Fire Station.

In the future we will have to rely on appliances coming from Alcester and in some cases Redditch but as Hereford and Worcester are proposing to cut an appliance in Redditch help cannot always be guaranteed.

We have not given up and the Parish Council urge everyone to write to our MP Nadhim Zahawi and the leader of Warwickshire County Council Cllr Alan Farnell.

It is so important that we keep up the pressure.

Studley Sports and Social Club Fun Day - Saturday 10th July 2010

Studley Sports and Social Club Fun Day - Saturday 10th July 2010

This is the second year for the event and it proved to be a success for the club with many stalls, a pig roast and events throughout the afternoon.

Luckily the weather this year was hot and sunny unlike last year which was very wet indeed.

We hope that villagers will continue to support the event and each year it should get bigger and better.

Dedication of the Flag Pole, Studley Village Hall - 17th April 2010

Dedication of the Flag Pole, Studley Village Hall - 17th April 2010

Dedication of the Flag Pole, Studley Village Hall - 17th April 2010

A flag pole kindly donated to the Village by the family of the late Jack Chambers was dedicated at a Ceremony on Saturday 17th April at Studley Village Hall. It was very well attended and it was great to see the Studley Cricket Eleven attend before their match on Saturday. I’m sure Jack would have been delighted by the turn out.

He was a much loved and well respected member of the Community and remembered by many in the village and was a legendary teacher at the old Studley National School, situated where Bruno’s bakery now stands in the High Street. When that closed the school was transferred to the Junior School in New Road and he became Deputy Head.

He was always interested in sport and was a life-long member of Studley Cricket Club, mainly remembered as a firm umpire and for many years he was President of the Club. His judicial approach to life perhaps caused him to be elected a Magistrate and he served on the bench for about 20 years. After coming out of the services after the war he helped to found Studley British Legion where he was Treasurer.

He was a member of Studley Parish Council and was Chairman in 1953 when the previous Village Hall was opened by Mrs Florence Allen. He was also a member of Alcester Rural District Council up to its amalgamation with others to form Stratford on Avon District Council in 1974.

It was a day to remember for Mrs Priscilla Cooke and members of her family.

Studley Common Nature Reserve

Did you know that Studley has its very own Nature Reserve? It was opened in September 2008 and covers some 4.3 hectares of land on the north side of St Judes Avenue.

Presentation of Community Shield Awards

Presentation of the Awards took place on Saturday 27th February 2010 at Studley Sports and Social Club.

It proved to be a very enjoyable evening by those who attended. £200 was raised in the charity raffle, a total £100 to go towards the Firefighters fund . Although the decision on closure has been put on the back burner it is important to remember that it is only a postponement and we must be ready to swing into action again when required. It was also decided that £100 should be sent to the Haiti Earthquake Disaster fund when the scale of the disaster became clear. Thank you to all the local businesses, individuals and organisations who donated the prizes.

The village is extremely lucky to have such a network of organisations, families and individuals who give generously of their time and effort to the Community and make Studley a great place to live. The recipients of the awards this year are a great example of this.

The Silver Jubilee Shield

This was presented to Peter Smith. For as long as anyone can remember Pete Smith has organised the annual British Legion Poppy Appeal and Remembrance Day parade in Studley. A few years ago the Studley Branch of the British Legion closed through lack of support. Pete was of course very upset by this but even worse for him was the removal of the Standard and because we had no British Legion Branch we were no longer allowed to use the Studley Standard at our Remembrance Day Parade.

Pete never gave up trying to reform the branch and finally 18 months ago he got enough names on a list to reform the Studley Branch of the British Legion and last November for the first time we all marched behind the Studley Standard once more. For the past two years Pete has been unable to walk in the parade himself but he is still instrumental in its organisation and attends both services at our memorial and Village Hall.

Pete is an unsung hero and the Parish Council are delighted that the work he does has been recognised.

The Millennium Shield

This was presented to Studley Sports and Social Club. The Club was formed when Entaco handed the facility over to the Parish Council as a gift to the village along with almost £80,000 of debt.

For more than 20 years a small band of volunteers from the village have kept the grounds and club house to the standard required by all the teams and sporting organisations who use the facilities.

It is no mean feat as most of the Committee spend every weekend all year round restoring, repairing, grass cutting, pitch marking and decorating - these are just a few of the tasks in addition to juggling the finances and keeping the Committees of the Tennis, Bowls and various football and cricket teams happy, often an impossible task.

The work done by the Committee is often overlooked and they have never really been given the recognition they deserve. It is hoped in future years with their continued dedication the Club will go from strength to strength.

The Golden Jubilee Youth Shield

The Golden Jubilee Youth Shield presented to George Vale

This was presented to George Vale. He was diagnosed with cancer five and a half years ago at the age of eight. Mad about music systems and football George has not let his ongoing treatment stop his activities. He has had to curtail his football and no longer plays himself. Instead he concentrates his efforts in coaching the local Under 8 Team at BKL, always encouraging them whatever their abilities.

He has raised more than £20,000 over the last five years for Birmingham Children’s Hospital where he receives his treatment by organising Disco’s at several local schools, other events and parties. He has also raised money for the local Parish Church and families of the Firefighters who lost their lives at Atherstone under Stour.

He never complains and is always positive, an inspiration to all of us.

Studley Skatepark

The skatepark is now complete and is proving to be very popular with skate boarders and BMX riders alike. It has become a focal point for the youngsters to meet.

Litter bins and seating will be installed in the very near future.

Studley Parish Plan

Studley Parish Plan has now been published and accepted by the Parish Council. It has been presented to Stratford District Council and adopted at their full Council meeting on 5th July 2007. It is a very detailed and comprehensive document that covers all life within the village. It identifies actions and work that needs to be done as most people want to see the regeneration of Studley. This needs to be done in partnership with all local authorities as this will be a long term plan and will allow the Parish Council to have a more influential role within Studley

The Executive Summary of the Parish Plan will be delivered to all homes in Studley by the end of June.

A little bit about Studley Parish Council ...

Studley Parish Council was formed in 1895. Situated in the west of Warwickshire close to the border of Worcestershire and within easy reach of Alcester, Stratford on Avon and Redditch in Worcestershire. The Parish Council serves a population of over 6,000 making Studley one of the largest villages in England.

Studley Parish Council owns and upkeeps both Crooks Lane and Brickyard Lane Recreation Grounds, allotment sites at Station Road and Redditch Road as well as the Parish Cemetery opposite St Mary’s Parish Church . In 1999 we acquired an extra acre of land adjoining the original cemetery thanks to the late Stephen Boler. In January 2005 this area was consecrated by the Bishop of Coventry and is now in use.

The Parish Council is also responsible for street lighting in the village.

We will continue to add to and update this website on a regular basis. If there are any issues or areas of interest you feel should be included on the site please do not hesitate to contact Studley Parish Council
